Recent EU Regulations for Condensing Boilers Provide Excellent Opportunity for Condensate Removal Tank Pumps

According to the European Union (EU), heaters are responsible for 25 percent of the continent's CO2 emissions.

Two European Directives – the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives entered into force in September 2015, after years of negotiation between the European Commission and industry stakeholders.

Since these regulations came into force, in most instances, only gas boilers and water heaters using energy-efficient condensation technology will be allowed for sale in the EU.

These minimum standards mean that nearly everybody who replaces their boiler will replace it with a condensing boiler.

Condensing boilers are water heaters fueled by gas or oil. They achieve improved efficiency by condensing water vapour and recovering the latent heat of vaporisation, which would otherwise have been wasted.

In addition to the environmental benefits, these directives provide an excellent opportunity for installers to also integrate condensate removal pumps with their condensation boiler installations instead of relying on gravity-based drainage.

Gravity drainage usually needs to be installed close to an outside wall or may require substantial piping to drain properly if units are installed further away. In addition, leaking water from gravity drains is not uncommon and can cause expensive damage. There are also numerous health and safety risks that can be caused by gravity drains, including potential bacterial and fungal growth.

Installing condensate pumps solves a lot of these problems because they allow the water to drain instead of leaking or freezing, and the PH safe cartridge helps to neutralise acidic condensates that can often be corrosive for pipes.

Sauermann centrifugal tank pumps, such as the Si-1830 and Si-82, are ideal pumps for a condensation boiler installation. They are ideal for removing large amounts of condensate in higher temperature and acidic environments and can remove up to 500 litres per hour of condensate. We have even developed a tank pump, the Si-61, that uses piston technology that also is ideal for gas boiler installation. Tank pumps can be wall mounted, floor mounted, in-pan or suspended and are very easy to install.
