5 Key Advantages of Using a Peristaltic Pump for Air Conditioning

HVAC professionals know that effective condensate management is critical to the reliability and longevity of any air conditioning installation. While peristaltic pumps are widely recognized in high-tech sectors like pharmaceuticals and chemical engineering for their precision dosing, this technology also offers a first-class solution for AC condensate removal.

Here are five reasons why a mini peristaltic condensate pump such as the Sauermann Si-50, Si-51 and Si-52 can enhance certain air conditioning installations and maximise user satisfaction.

1. Power suited for a wide range of AC units

There's no need to oversize your pump! Most air conditioners installed in small commercial buildings (offices, shops, hotel rooms, etc.) are rated up to 8 kW (27,000 BTU). The new generation of Sauermann peristaltic pumps is specifically engineered for these common systems, including wall-mounted units, fan coils, and ducted units. They offer the necessary power and delivery head (constant flow rate of 6 litres per hour up to 12 meters for Sauermann models).

2. Ultra-quiet, vibration-free operation

Acoustic comfort is a non-negotiable requirement, especially in hospitality, offices, and residential settings. Peristaltic technology stands out with its low-speed rotary mechanism, which is very quiet and vibration-free. The condensate is gently "pushed" through a tube, ensuring absolute discretion. The new Sauermann Si-50, Si-51 and Si-52 peristaltic condensate pumps have been redesigned to be even quieter than previous models, guaranteeing total peace of mind for the end-user.

3. Innovative and reliable activation methods

One of the greatest strengths of modern peristaltic condensate pumps lies in their intelligent triggering methods, which eliminate common points of failure like clogged floats. This is the case, for example, with Si-50 and Si-51:

  • Si-50: triggered by the AC compressor signal
The Si-50 pump activates simultaneously with the air conditioner's compressor and continues to run for 4 minutes after it shuts down, ensuring all condensate is completely drained. This operating mode is simple, direct, and exceptionally reliable.
  • Si-51: triggered by temperature differential
Other foolproof detection system, the Si-51 uses two thermal probes. It starts running as soon as the temperature difference between the air intake and outlet of the AC unit reaches 6°C (11°F), a clear sign of condensate production. The pump also continues to operate for 4 minutes when the temperature differential falls below 6°C.

Both methods are particularly reliable and dirt-resistant thanks to the absence of moving parts in their activation system. However, in certain cases where these solutions are not applicable, the Si-52 remains available with a conventional float detection system within a separate detection block.

4. Simplified, non-intrusive maintenance

When it comes to maintenance, peristaltic pumps will delight installers! They will be able to drastically reduce their intervention time thanks to their optimized design:

  • Maintenance without entering the room:
This is a game-changing advantage for the hotel sector! Thanks to their activation system, the Si-50 and Si-51 mini pumps can be installed remotely, outside the room in which the air conditioner is installed. This allows maintenance to be performed in a hallway, a utility room or a false ceiling, eliminating the need to disturb guests or access their room.
  • Tool-free tube replacement:
The pump head is detachable and the inner tube, the only wearing part in contact with the fluid, can be replaced in a few seconds without removing the pump, thanks to the front panel which can be opened easily without tools.
  • Standard cartridge fuse:
The standard 5 x 20 cartridge fuse can also be accessed and replaced quickly via a dedicated hatch.

5. Rock-solid reliability for demanding environments

Condensate is not always clean water. In commercial settings like bakeries (airborne flour), hair salons (airborne chemicals), or dusty environments, condensates can be heavily contaminated with particulates. Peristaltic technology is uniquely suited to handle this type of charged or dirty condensate.

In addition, the IP55-certified housing of the Si-50, Si-51 and Si-52 guarantees protection against dust and water splashes, allowing installation in damp and unventilated locations. This enhanced reliability prevents breakdowns and ensures continuous operation, even under the most demanding conditions.

The peristaltic condensate removal pump is not a niche technology! It represents a mature, reliable, and silent solution for the modern HVAC market. Professionals can take full advantage of the Sauermann Si-50, Si-51 and Si-52 range in very common areas of application: faster installation, optimised maintenance and long-term reliability.
